GROUP LESSONS

  1. Single lesson: $60 per surfer
  2. Multi lesson packages: start at $110 per surfer
  3. Group Discount! Book in a group of 4 or more and pay only $55 each.

Group surf lessons are:

  • 2 hours in duration
  • aimed at beginning to intermediate surfers
  • take place in waist deep water
  • have a maximum of 8 students to 1 instructor

You will:

  • meet us at the beach and be greeted by Dan or Meg at the van
  • fill out a consent form and then get fitted with a wetsuit
  • be given an appropriate board to carry onto the beach
  • learn about beach safety including dangers and hazards, assessing surf conditions, handling your board, and safe dismounts/crash positions
  • be shown how to pop up to your feet then practise your prone-to-feet technique on the sand
  • get into the water and SURF!

There is always an instructor with you in the water offering tips and tricks to improve your surfing.  We will share our time among all students by rotating around giving each person plenty of one-on-one instruction throughout the two hours.

If you are keen and fit, you might be interested in a double lesson.  You will have two 2-hour surf lessons in one day with a break between the two to either enjoy a picnic on the beach or grab a quick bite at one of the local eateries.

PRIVATE LESSONS

There are a couple of different reasons you might choose a private surf lesson.

  1. You (or your child) need one-on-one attention throughout the entire lesson.  In a group lesson, the instructors need to share their time among all the students.  Although we will always be keeping a watchful eye on all surfers, we are not able to be within arm’s reach of each student throughout the lesson.
  1. You are confident with the surfing basics, can consistently catch white water waves and successfully get up to your feet and are ready to develop your skills further. If you want someone to show you how to paddle out the back, duck dive and help you onto some unbroken waves, then a private lesson could be for you.
  1. You would like to have a surf lesson on your hard (fiberglass, epoxy) board.  We only use soft surfboards in our group lessons.

Most private lessons are 2 hours in duration depending on the needs of the particular surf student.  When you arrive at the beach, Dan or Meg will meet you at the van.  After filling out a consent form and getting into a wetsuit, we will discuss what you are hoping to achieve during the private lesson.  Many of our private surf lesson students have taken part in our group lessons first so we are aware of their particular skill levels.  If not, we will ask you to tell us what current surf skills you have.  We will then choose a surfboard or two to take down to the beach.

We will first go through ocean awareness and surf safety.  You will learn how to handle your board and negotiate your way out to the waves and then we will go through the techniques for getting up to your feet.  After a few practices on the sand and trying to make any corrections we see fit, we will head out into the surf.  Depending on your skill level, we may start in waist deep water to work on some aspects or we might each get on a board and paddle out together.  The lesson will be guided by your current skills, your goals for the lesson, and the conditions on the day.

If you are interested in a private surf lesson, please contact us for availability.  We will also try to get an idea of how we can help you get the most out of the lesson at this time.

Prices start at $180 for a 2-hour private surf lesson. For private groups (up to 8 surfers), contact us for pricing.

SCHOOL GROUPS

Whether you are looking for an activity to make your camp a little bit more interesting or planning an end of year celebration for your class, a  surfing lesson could be just the ticket.  No matter what you are looking for, we can develop a program to suit your needs.  We offer single group lessons or can design programs over multiple days.  We operate 7 days a week so we can offer surf lessons for your class during school hours as well as programs for boarding students looking for a weekend activity.  Please contact us for further information and pricing.

SURF EQUIPMENT HIRE MIDDLETON

We now offer surfboard, bodyboard, and wetsuit hire at Middleton!

If you would rather keep the sand out of your car, you can grab equipment straight from us at the beach.  It is best to ring ahead to let us know you are coming as once we have started a lesson, we will not be able to hire until after we are finished.

If you head to the beach on a day we aren’t there, you can visit our friends at Big Surf Australia (across from the Middleton General Store) who are open daily from 9ish to 5ish everyday for a variety of fibreglass, epoxy, and softboards as well as wetsuits for every size surfer.

GIRLS GO SURFING

At this stage, there are no national Girls Go Surfing Days organised.  However, if you are keen to get an all girls group together, we’d love to offer some girls (of all ages!) only lessons.

SURF SAFETY

Surfing is great fun but to have fun you need to stay safe.  Our goal is to teach you how to stay safe while having fun – our focus is solely on surfing and water safety.  During your surf lesson, we will make sure that you are staying as safe as possible under our supervision.  We will also teach you how to stay safe when you head into the surf without us.  Here are some of the safety aspects we teach.

  1. Dangers and Hazards – Rips, rocks, and other riders
  2. Surf Conditions – Wind, swell, and tide
  3. Using Landmarks
  4. Wipe Outs and Safe Dismounts
  5. Surf Etiquette

We pride ourselves on being the most safety conscious surf school on the Coast. Dan and/or Meg are present and involved in every single lesson because we love what we do and to also maintain our super high standard of lessons.  Our intro talks are legendary covering all aspects of safety and successful tips on learning to surf.  Some parents bring their kids to a surf lesson at the start of every summer just to hear the talk and brush up on all the safety tips!

All of our lessons are conducted at Surfers’ Parade, Middleton in waist deep water using soft Malibu surfboards between our large orange surf Lesson flags.  Bright orange surf lesson rashies are worn by all our surf students over the top of their wetsuits for easy recognition and all instructors wear red rashies.

The surf instructors (including Dan and/or Meg) rotate among the surf students multiple times throughout the lesson encouraging and fine tuning safe and successful techniques. You are invited to come down to the beach for an inspection of how we operate.  You will see how enthusiastic and interactive we are. We will only ever surf with students toward the end of a lesson once we have 100% success rate from ALL students.  All of our instructors hold a minimum Level 1 Surf Coaching qualification acquired through Surfing Australia.  We are all trained in Senior First Aid, CPR, and Surf Rescue.

On the rare occasion that the surf conditions are dangerous, we will cancel or postpone a lesson.  Kombi Surf puts you and your family’s safety before your money!

CONSENT FORM

Print it, fill it out & bring it along!  (If you forget or don’t have a printer, we will have plenty of blank copies at the beach.)
